The recent pork price hike has aroused wide-spread concern. Assistant Minister Huang Hai of the Ministry of Commerce was interviewed by Xinhua News Agency correspondent on the current supply/demand condition of Chinese pork market.
Q: What is the major reason of the recent pork price surge?
A: The dispersion of pig farming in China often results in poor transmission of information, which in turn leads to the regular alternation between oversupply and undersupply in pork market. The outbreak of Blue-ear pig disease in some regions is also blamed for the price surge lately. Meanwhile, the continuous price hikes of foodstuff both in China and in the world raised the cost of pig-farming, to the detriment of pork supply. The sustaining heat and frequent floods in some regions this summer also contributed to the difficulties in transporting pig and pork from production site to sales site.
Q: What specific measures has the Ministry of Commerce taken to stabilize the market?
A: Solving the supply-demand problem of pork market demands extra attention on the production and distribution of pork. Also, we need to keep a constant eye on the price and the supply-demand condition of the market, to connect production with sales, supply with demand, to provide necessary market guidance and intervention based on emergency plans, and to step up control of pork quality and safety.
Q: How do you see the development of meat market in the immediate future?
A:In order to stabilize pork price, the State Council introduced a special working team led by the National Development and Reform Commission, and involving Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance, National Bureau of Industry and Commerce, National Bureau of Quality Inspection, etc. The joined effort of these different sources would surely relieve the present difficulty in pork supply.
The central government is highly concerned with the recent pork price surge. The guiding principle is to ensure the availability and affordability of pork to consumers while increasing the income of pig-raising farmers at the same time. Under the guidance of the central government, all local governments and related sectors are working on preparatory plans and measures to make sure that there is adequate supply of pork in the market, and at reasonable prices.
